Prophetic twist to Sharon's imminent death
Kaduri, subject of a new book and movie, both titled “The Rabbi Who Found Messiah,” announced to his followers the long-awaited Messiah would not come until after the death of Sharon. He made the prediction two months before Sharon, still acting as prime minister, had a major stroke in 2006 that has left him in a coma ever since.   

Former Israeli Prime Minister Sharon Dies at 85
Sharon's demonstrative visit to the Temple Mount, or Haram as-Sharif, soon followed. Palestinian riots escalated into a full-fledged uprising that would claim more than 3,000 Palestinian lives and kill 1,000 Israelis. In February 2001, with the fighting continuing and last-ditch peace talks collapsing, Israelis grew deeply disillusioned and inclined to lay all the blame on Palestinian leader Arafat. Yearning for a strong leader, they elected Sharon prime minister in a landslide. 
 
Japan and China criticise each other's Africa policies
China and Japan are criticising each other's policies in Africa as each country pledges more money for the continent. Japan has suggested China is buying off African leaders with lavish gifts. Meanwhile China accuses Japan of courting African support for a place on the United National Security Council.  

CAR crisis: Stranded foreigners to be evacuated
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said it would start airlifting 800 Chadians from a makeshift camp in the capital, Bangui. Some 33,000 Africans from neighbouring countries needed urgent help, it said. CAR's interim President Michel Djotodia resigned on Friday over the fighting between Muslim and Christian militia.   

West Virginia chemical spill creates water warning
About 300,000 people in the US state of West Virginia have been warned not to drink tap water after a chemical spill into a river near the state capital. The water advisory closed schools and businesses in nine counties, and cancelled a state legislative session. A foaming agent used in the coal preparation process leaked from a tank at Freedom Industries on Thursday.   

Iranian military official: Hezbollah capable of pinpoint missile strikes throughout Israel
A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard Commander said Saturday that Hezbollah in Lebanon has upgraded its capabilities in recent years and is now able to carry out pinpoint missile strikes on targets throughout Israel. ...Brig-Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh said, "...Hezbollah’s power has so much increased in recent years that they can attack any target in any part of the occupied territories with a high precision capability and with a very low margin of error.”   

China surpasses US as world's largest trading nation
China became the world's largest trading nation in 2013, overtaking the US in what Beijing described as "a landmark milestone" for the country. China's annual trade in goods passed the $4tn (£2.4tn) mark for the first time last year according to official data, after exports from the world's second largest economy rose 7.9% to $2.21tn and imports rose 7.3% to $1.95tn.

US Secretary of State John Kerry is once again in town trying to reach an agreement on a framework for continued peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. One of the issues of dispute is the fate of the Jordan Valley, which is indispensable for Israel’s national security.

Giant US retailer Target said Friday that up to 110 million customers have had their personal data stolen in a data breach, sharply raising its initial estimate.

Israel announces plans for 1,400 new settlement homes
Israel has announced plans to build 1,400 new homes in Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The move was expected after the release of 26 Palestinian prisoners last month, but was delayed until after a visit by US Secretary of State John Kerry.

The U.S. military secretly sent a small team of advisors to Somalia last month to assist with operations against militants, the first time U.S. troops have been stationed there since two helicopters were shot down and 18 American soldiers were killed in 1993.   

Premier Urges Award for Boy Who Halted Pakistan Attack
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday recommended that a high civil award for bravery be bestowed on a teenager who was killed this week while stopping a suicide bomber from attacking his school in northwestern Pakistan.   

Iran, EU make progress in nuclear implementation talks
Iran and the European Union appeared to make progress in resolving outstanding differences on how to implement a landmark nuclear deal in talks in Geneva on Friday but the United States said discussions were not yet finalized.   

Russia tells US it will continue backing Assad
Russian diplomats told a top visiting US dignitary on Friday that Moscow would continue backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's campaign against rebel forces despite peace talks due later this month. US Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman's visit came ahead of a crunch meeting in Paris on Monday between her boss John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that will focus on Moscow's push to give Syrian ally Iran a formal seat at the so-called Geneva 2 conference.   

Israel excavates site in flashpoint West Bank city
Israel is excavating an archaeological site in the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron, officials said Thursday, in a move critics say aims to legitimise Jewish settlement in Palestinian territory.  

'Nearly 500 killed' in Syria rebel-jihadist fighting
Nearly 500 people, among them at least 85 civilians, have been killed in a week of fighting pitting Syrian rebels against jihadists in the north of the strife-torn country, a monitoring group said Friday.
