Report: Netanyahu Supports Liberman Land Swap Plan
Binyamin Netanyahu supports Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman's land swap plan, according to a Maariv report Friday. The swap, which Israel reportedly offered the US in talks in December, refers to the area known as the Triangle in east-central Israel. The area includes the cities of Tayibe and Tira, in which about 300,000 Arabs live.

After a virtual back-and-forth over the pope’s criticism of the free-market system, talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh kept an eye on the Roman Catholic pontiff on his show Tuesday, comparing the decision by the “gay” magazine the Advocate to name Francis its “Person of the Year” to President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize award in 2009.

NSA ' harvested around 200m text messages a day'
The US National Security Agency has been gathering nearly 200 million text messages a day from around the world, gathering data on people's travel plans, contacts and credit card transactions, according to the Guardian newspaper. Code-named "Dishfire," the NSA programme collects "pretty much everything it can," the Guardian said, citing a joint investigation with Channel 4 News based on material from fugitive former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.   

'Israel will make Hamas suffer if Gaza rocket fire continues'

Syria conflict: Government offers prisoner exchange
Speaking in Moscow, Walid Muallem also said he had presented a ceasefire plan for the second city Aleppo to his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. The moves came as the opposition Syrian National Coalition meets in Istanbul to decide whether to go to next week's peace conference. The coalition is under Western pressure to participate in the Geneva II talks.  

Mexican government says 'vigilantes not the target'
The Mexican government has tried to reassure vigilantes in the western state of Michoacan that they are not the target of its security operation. Hundreds of troops have been sent to the area to restore order after groups of vigilantes clashed with members of the Knights Templar drug cartel. Many of the "self-defence groups" have refused to heed the government's call to lay down arms.   

Ukraine criminalises pro-EU protests
EU and US diplomats have voiced dismay after Ukraine on Thursday (16 January) criminalised almost every aspect of the pro-EU protest movement. President Viktor Yanukovych’s ruling Party of the Regions rushed through the legislation via show of hands in parliament.   

Iranian 'tried to ship F-35 documents to Iran'
US authorities have arrested an Iranian-American engineer accused of attempting to ship stolen documentation on a high-tech military plane to Iran. Federal prosecutors have charged Mozaffar Khazaee, 59, with trying to smuggle thousands of pages of F-35 Joint Strike Fighter documents.

Syria's main Western-backed opposition coalition is set to vote Friday on whether to attend next week's peace talks in Geneva. The Syrian National Coalition's meeting in Istanbul comes amid intense U.S. pressure for the opposition to attend the conference, which is aimed at forming a transitional government.  

Fire Near Los Angeles Damages 1,700 Acres
Three men were arrested Thursday in connection with a brush fire that destroyed close to 2,000 acres of land 25 miles northeast of Los Angeles. County fire officials said that the suspects were camping in the Angeles National Forest and that one of the men admitted they had been burning paper in a campfire Thursday morning, which quickly got out of control.   

Chemical watchdog worried over Syria attack reports
The head of the world's chemical weapons watchdog voiced concern on Thursday about reports from the Syrian government of attacks on two chemical facilities but said they could not be independently verified. "The Syrian authorities have reported attacks on two sites," Ahmet Uzumcu, director general of the Hague-based Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), said on a visit to Rome.  

EU ready to resume business with Iran on Jan 20
The European Union will begin lifting sanctions against Iran on Monday, January 20, the minute it receives word that Tehran has begun implementing a deal to curb its nuclear programme.  

Israel PM slams EU 'hypocrisy' on settlements
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the European Union Thursday for calling in ambassadors over plans for some 1,800 new homes for Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank. Netanyahu's angry remarks come hot on the heels of a public spat between his defence minister and US Secretary of State John Kerry, who is energetically pushing Israel and the Palestinians toward a framework for a peace agreement.
