Narrowly leads the economy, unemployment, healthcare
Americans start the new year with a variety of national concerns on their minds. Although none is dominant, the government, at 21%, leads the list of what Americans consider the most important problem facing the country. The economy closely follows at 18%, and then unemployment/jobs and healthcare, each at 16%. No other issue is mentioned by as much as 10% of the public; however, the federal budget deficit or debt comes close, at 8%.

US Secretary of State John Kerry will present a framework paper that will serve as a basis for further negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians by the end of the month, Palestinian sources said on Saturday. Although officials in the Prime Minister’s Office would not confirm this, Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon told Israel Radio the same thing on Saturday

The Target Corp. data breach that has hurt its sales and has made many consumers skittish about using their cards has been traced to a Russian teenager who authored the malware used in the security breach, according to a cyber-intelligence firm.

Pregnant nun shocks church
A nun who kept her pregnancy a secret has shocked the Roman Catholic Church by giving birth to a baby boy and naming him Francesco in honour of the Pope. The 31-year-old El Salvador nun called an ambulance after suffering from severe stomach pains on Wednesday, the UK's Telegraph reported. She gave birth to the 7.7lbs boy only a few hours later. 
 
Pakistan troops killed in bomb blast
At least 20 soldiers have been killed when a bomb blast hit an army convoy in north-western Pakistan, officials say. They say at least 20 others were injured near the town of Bannu, and there are fears that the death toll will rise further. Unconfirmed reports say a suicide bomber carried out the attack. 
 
A disaster in the making: 95% of ATMs still run Windows XP
As we’ve mentioned multiple times, now is really the time to upgrade from Windows XP if you haven’t done so already. Even though Microsoft will extend support for its Windows XP security products through July 2015, the company has warned that “the effectiveness of antimalware solutions on out-of-support operating systems is limited.” Bloomberg Businessweek reports that some of the most important machines that desperately need to upgrade from Windows XP are ATMs, of which an estimated 95% still run on Microsoft’s older operating system.

Almost everyone who cast ballots supported Egypt's new constitution in this week's referendum, results announced Saturday show, but a boycott by Islamists and low youth turnout suggest the country is still dangerously divided.   

Syria opposition to join peace talks to oust Assad
Syria's deeply divided opposition finally agreed to join an international peace conference, saying it wanted to remove President Bashar al-Assad from power, a day after Damascus offered concessions.
