Official: Al-Qaida Has Enough Arms to Take Baghdad
A senior Iraqi official claims al-Qaida fighters hunkered down in a city they seized late last month west of Baghdad have enough heavy weapons to allegedly take the country's capital. Senior deputy Interior Minister Adnan al-Asadi said Monday that Iraqi forces are fighting "fierce battles" against heavily armed militants to recapture parts of Ramadi, the capital of the western Anbar province, and also the nearby city of Fallujah.

I was insured. I think anyone who is going through a serious illness should have immediate responses. Rogue Stars Escaping Milky Way At Hypervelocity Surprise Astronomers
An international team of astronomers has discovered a surprising new class of "hypervelocity stars" – solitary stars moving fast enough to escape the gravitational grasp of the Milky Way galaxy. The discovery of this new set of "hypervelocity" stars was described at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society this week in Washington, D.C., and was published in the Jan. 1 issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

President Bashar Assad on Sunday said he would not relinquish power, and that the end of his rule would not be a subject of peace talks this week in Montreaux, Switzerland. Assad made his remarks to visiting Russian lawmakers.   

Only one in five Israelis trusts Obama on Iran
Asked if they agreed with the statement, “I trust US President Barack Obama to ensure that Iran does not achieve a nuclear weapon,” just 22 percent of likely Israeli voters said yes. Fully 64% in the survey, conducted by pollster Stephan Miller of (202) Strategies, said they did not agree with the statement, and 15% said they did not know or refused to answer. The survey also asked Israeli voters if they held a favorable view of the US president. Even among the 33% who said they did (50% said they did not), trust in Obama’s ability to stop an Iranian nuclear weapons push was split evenly at 43% to 43%.

British people fighting in Syria are being trained as “jihadists” and then encouraged to return to the UK to launch attacks on home soil, an al-Qaeda defector and western security sources have told the Telegraph. ...Britain’s security and intelligence agencies believe the threat of would-be terrorists being directed back to the UK by al-Qaeda organisers in Syria is growing.  

Report: Persecution of Christians reveals most abuse in Muslim countries
The majority of anti-Christian persecution in the world in 2013 took place at the hands of Muslims, according to a list by Open Doors USA . The nondenominational group supporting persecuted Christians worldwide recently released its 2014 World Watch List, that describes and ranks anti-Christian persecution in a list of the 50 worst countries for the past year. 
 
Franco-German brigade ready for intervention in Mali
We begin to see a little more clearly what it means to be the revival of the Franco-German defense, announced by President Hollande during his press conference on January 14. German soldiers of the Franco-German Brigade (BFA) and should soon join Mali to serve in the EUTM-Mali , the EU mission training Malian army. Certainly the Germans involved since the launch of the mission , including the training of engineers and medical support. In addition, Germany provides air support for the UN force (Minusma) from Senegal.  

China economic growth rate stabilises at 7.7%
China's economy, the world's second-largest, has shown signs of stabilising, as 2013's growth rate matched that for 2012, official data suggests. Gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an annual rate of 7.7% in the October-to-December period, down from 7.8% in the previous quarter. But it was still higher than the government's target rate of 7.5%. 
 
Barack Obama: 'Marijuana no more dangerous than alcohol'
US President Barack Obama has said smoking marijuana is no more dangerous than alcohol, but still called it a "bad idea". Speaking to The New Yorker magazine, he said it was wrong to think legalising the drug would be "a panacea" that could solve many social problems. Mr Obama was referring to recent legalisation of marijuana in the states of Colorado and Washington. 
 
Iraq: Iraqi army launches offensive against Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS) militants in Ramadi
raqi security forces have launched an operation against Al-Qaeda-linked militants in the city of Ramadi. Large areas of Ramadi, the provincial capital of the western Anbar Province, fell to militant control in late December. On January 19, heavy clashes were reported between militants and Iraqi police, which were supported by local tribesmen and SWAT teams. Police have imposed a curfew throughout the city.  

Ukraine protests turn violent as EU ministers meet
Ukraine’s pro-EU protests turned violent on Sunday (19 January) amid anger over new laws and EU inaction. EU foreign ministers and foreign relations chief Catherine Ashton will discuss the situation at a regular meeting in Brussels on Monday. She told press on Monday morning only that she is “following [the events] closely.”   

Obama: Less than fifty-fifty odds of Mideast peace treaty but progress also important
US President Barack Obama believes that there is a less than 50 percent chance that his administration's efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will end in success. ...Obama told the New Yorker's editor David Remnick that the odds of reaching final treaties in US efforts on the Israeli-Palestinian front, the Iranian nuclear program, and in the Syrian war were less than fifty-fifty. 
 
Report: Canada pledges to absorb Palestinian refugees as part of peace deal
Palestinian sources expect Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to give assurances to the Ramallah government that Canada officially pledges to absorb refugees from neighboring Arab countries as part of a final status peace settlement with Israel, according to Israel Radio. ...Harper is scheduled to address the Knesset Monday a 6:00 pm, the first Canadian prime minister ever to do so.  

5.2 magnitude earthquake jolts southwest Bengkulu
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter Scale jolted Southwest of Kaur, Bengkulu on Monday at 11:45 a.m. local time (GMT+7). According to the Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 4.94 degree on Southern Latitude and 102.94 degree on Eastern Longitude or 64km Southwest of Kaur, Bengkulu, at a depth of 24km.   

Minor earthquake felt east of Fairbanks
The first, at 11:31 p.m., was just less than a magnitude of 3, was about 6 miles deep. It was centered 7 miles north-northeast of North Pole and about 12 miles east of Fairbanks. A minute later, another quake with a magnitude of 2.26, was reported at a depth of 5 miles about 4 miles west of North Pole.  

Strong magnitude 6.3 quake rattles New Zealand; no reports of major damage or injuries
The magnitude 6.3 quake struck the country's lower North Island at a little before 4 p.m. and rattled the capital Wellington. Many residents of the city were at home because it was a public holiday.   

Church shelters Muslims from Central African killing
Small children and women in colourful headscarves cluster around the altar, bundles of their belongings piled high near a statue of the Virgin Mary. In the Central African town of Boali, the local church has become a refuge for some 700 Muslims fleeing a flare-up in sectarian violence, part of a nationwide wave of unrest unleashed by a coup last March. 
 
Vietnam sentences 30 to death over drug smuggling
A court in Vietnam has sentenced 30 people to death over heroin smuggling in what is said to be the largest such trial ever held in the country. The trial, over the smuggling of nearly two tonnes of heroin, began in Quang Ninh province in early January.   

New Zealand earthquake shakes North Island
An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 has rattled New Zealand's North Island, but there are no reports so far of major damage or serious injury. The quake struck 38km (24 miles) north-east of Masterton at 15:52 local time (02:52 GMT), US Geological Survey said. Residents described major shaking, goods tumbling off shelves and pictures knocked askew.
