Bill Nye, Ken Ham to Hold Debate on Viability of Creationism
Creation Museum CEO and President Ken Ham announced that he will hold a debate on the viability of creationism with popular scientist Bill Nye on Feb. 4 at the museum's Legacy Hall in Petersburg, Ky. "A debate with Mr. Nye, nationally known for his children's TV program and for promoting evolution, will be one of our major events in 2014 to highlight how children and teens are being influenced by evolutionary thinking," Ham said on Thursday. 
 
Netanyahu plans a national referendum on US peace framework to extend negotiations for another year
The prime minister has been quoted as saying that he needs the referendum to push back “domestic pressures from the right”, but in any case he believes it will be politically advantageous. He has confided to his closest circle that for the first time that he is in favor of the Kerry proposals and, although they don’t see eye to eye on many of the issues, he thinks the gaps between them can be bridged. 
 
California Legislators Propose Legislation To Keep NSA Out Of Their State
A bipartisan group of California State lawmakers introduced legislation Monday to fight the National Security Agency’s spying on American citizens by prohibiting the State and its localities from providing “material support” to the Federal agency. The bill would disallow the NSA to access public water and electricity from California utility companies, bar companies with State contracts from working with the NSA and prohibit colleges receiving State funding from building research partnerships with the spy agency.  

ISIL pledges to ‘crush’ rival militants in Syria
Abu Mohammed Al-Adnani, the spokesman for the ISIL, called on its supporters in Syria to “crush them (the rival groups) totally and kill the conspiracy at birth.” The remarks came after the al-Nusrah Front, another notorious al-Qaeda offshoot in Syria, called for a ceasefire with the so-called Free Syrian Army.  

Syria army continues operations across country
According to military sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Tuesday, the army continued its clean-up operations in Adra in the countryside of the capital Damascus, killing seven militants, official SANA news agency reported. Elsewhere, in Douma, the government troops stormed the militants’ hideouts and killed a number of them. The government forces also killed a number of militants in Yelda and Daraya in the southern countryside of the capital.   

Democrats Ask Mike Bloomberg to Back Off Gun Control Push
According to Mediate.com, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) do not want Senators like Mark Pryor (D-AR) "targeted" for opposing gun control. MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell noted that Bloomberg is viewed as a single-issue activist "focused on guns at the risk of jeopardizing the Senate for Democrats."

A California elementary school is facing a possible lawsuit after a teacher allegedly confiscated a six-year-old child’s Christmas candy canes and told him “Jesus is not allowed in school.” Last December, Isaiah Martinez brought his first grade classmates at Merced Elementary School candy canes. Attached to each treat was a message explaining the religious legend surround the candies. It takes a special kind of evil to confiscate a six-year-old child’s Christmas gifts. In this age of tolerance and diversity, public school educators seem to be under the impression that they can bully and intimidate Christian boys and girls. 
 
Record freeze settles into eastern United States, affects 200 million people
The below-freezing conditions are being carried from the arctic by a phenomenon known as a polar vortex, which is being blamed for at least 16 deaths. The big chill has created weather that has paralysed transport, overwhelmed homeless shelters and closed schools and businesses.

Team discovers lost, 100-year old pictures from Antarctica expedition

Giant sunspot AR1944 is directly facing Earth and crackling with solar flares. Yesterday, Jan. 7th, an X1-class explosion in the sunspot's magnetic canopy hurled a CME in our direction. High-latitude sky watchers shoud be alert for auroras on Jan. 9th when the cloud is expected to arrive. 
 
Egypt unrest: Mohammed Morsi absence halts Cairo trial
The trial of Egypt's ousted President Mohammed Morsi has been adjourned after officials said bad weather had stopped his helicopter from taking off. Other defendants arrived at the police compound by helicopter but Mr Morsi was still said to be in Alexandria.
  
United States sending more troops and tanks to South Korea
The United States said on Tuesday it will send 800 more soldiers and about 40 Abrams main battle tanks and other armored vehicles to South Korea next month as part of a military rebalance to East Asia after more than a decade of war in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Gun Sales Surge To Record High In 2013; Expect Ammo To Spike In 2014
A record 21 million applications were run through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) last year - an 8% increase over 2012 and, as The Washington Times reports, the 11th straight year that the number has risen.
