There has been a 4.1 magnitude earthquake in the Bristol Channel. The tremor was felt here in Cornwall just after lunchtime on Thursday.

Forget the Internet - soon there will be the OUTERNET: Company plans to beam free Wi-fi to every person on Earth from space
An ambitious project known as Outernet is aiming to launch hundreds of miniature satellites into low Earth orbit by June 2015. Each satellite will broadcast the Internet to phones and computers giving billions of people across the globe free online access. Citizens of countries like China and North Korea that have censored online activity could be given free and unrestricted cyberspace. 'There's really nothing that is technically impossible to this'.   

Student Science Experiment Finds Plants won’t Grow near Wi-Fi Router
Five ninth-grade young women from Denmark recently created a science experiment that is causing a stir in the scientific community. It started with an observation and a question. The girls noticed that if they slept with their mobile phones near their heads at night, they often had difficulty concentrating at school the next day. They wanted to test the effect of a cellphone’s radiation on humans, but their school, Hjallerup School in Denmark, did not have the equipment to handle such an experiment. So the girls designed an experiment that would test the effect of cellphone radiation on a plant instead.   

PA Official: Abbas Ready for Israel as a Jewish State
A senior PLO official was quoted as saying that Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas was prepared to recognize Israel – this time, for real. A story in Maariv Thursday quoted Nabil Amaro as saying on PA television that Abbas would agree to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, as part of the negotiations being conducted by US Secretary of State John Kerry.  

"Star Wars" on the seas: U.S. Navy to deploy laser for 1st time
Some of the Navy's futuristic weapons sound like something out of "Star Wars," with lasers designed to shoot down aerial drones and electric guns that fire projectiles at hypersonic speeds. That future is now. The Navy plans to deploy its first laser on a ship later this year, and it intends to test an electromagnetic rail gun prototype aboard a vessel within two years.

ANOTHER CME IMPACT
For the second time in 24 hours, a CME has hit Earth's magnetic field. The impact on Feb. 20th at ~0300 UT re-energized a subsiding geomagnetic storm that sparked bright auroras over North America on Feb. 19th. As Earth's magnetic field reverberates from this second blow, auroras are spreading around the Arctic Circle and possibly down toward lower latitudes.  

North Korea Arrests Australian Christian Missionary for Handing Out Gospel Tracts
The North Korean government has arrested an Australian Christian missionary for handing out Gospel tracts, with the family of the 75-year-old man fearing he could face up to 15 years in prison.   

Pakistani jets kill up to 40 'Taliban militants' in North Waziristan
Up to 40 alleged militants have been killed by Pakistani jets which bombed a series of hideouts in the far north of the country after peace talks with the government waivered Reports said the jets pounded the targets in North Waziristan on Wednesday night after the strike was authorised by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.  

Department of Homeland Security cancels national license-plate tracking plan
Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson on Wednesday ordered the cancellation of a plan by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to develop a national license-plate tracking system after privacy advocates raised concern about the initiative. The order came just days after ICE solicited proposals from companies to compile a database of license-plate information from commercial and law enforcement tag readers.  

Bumblebees infected with honeybee diseases
The beleaguered bumblebee faces a new threat, scientists say. Researchers have found that two diseases harboured by honeybees are spilling over into wild bumblebees. Insects infected with deformed wing virus and a fungal parasite called Nosema ceranae were found across England, Scotland and Wales.   

Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant leaks radioactive water
Around 100 tonnes of highly radioactive water have leaked from a storage tank at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, operator Tokyo Electric (Tepco) says. The toxic water may have overflowed after a valve was left open by mistake, Tepco said. However the water was unlikely to have reached the ocean, the operator added.   

Obama champions controversial North America-Asia trade deal
US President Barack Obama has vowed to expand trade agreements between North America and Asia, despite concerns within his own political party. Ending a day of talks with the leaders of Mexico and Canada, Mr Obama said they must keep up their "competitive advantage". The three countries are negotiating a major Pacific trade deal. 
 
US government warns airlines of new shoe-bomb threat
The US government has advised airlines to beware of any attempts to smuggle explosives onboard in footwear. Homeland security officials did not indicate any known specific threat or plots, but said the warning focused on US-bound flights from abroad. It is the second time in recent weeks that the US has warned of an increased threat of explosives on airliners.   

EU and US co-ordinating Ukraine sanctions list
US and EU officials are working together to decide which Ukrainian officials to blacklist when EU foreign ministers meet on Thursday (20 December). Ben Rhodes, a US national security advisor...“We are in consultation with the European Union...which individuals should be held responsible for the violence, and in consideration of issues like imposing sanctions related to the ongoing violence.”
