U.S. Navy battle group preparing for six-month deployment to Middle East
The U.S. Navy has been ordered to send a battle group to the Middle East. The Navy said it would deploy the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group in the Middle East over the next few weeks. The Navy said Bataan, with more than 4,000 sailors and Marines, would leave its base in Norfolk, Va. on Feb. 8. 
 
UK floods: 80mph winds set to lash southern England
Coastal areas of southern England are bracing themselves for fierce waves and winds of up to 80mph, adding to the misery they have endured in recent weeks.  

UK storms: Coastal areas in west hit by renewed gales
Gales are continuing across southern parts of the UK, with coastal areas facing west bearing the brunt of the strongest winds. Forecasters said gusts reached 80mph along the coasts of Cornwall, the Bristol Channel and west Wales. Coastguards in Devon said they were expecting "phenomenal" waves offshore, possibly reaching 45ft (14m) in height.   

Top Iranian official: Israel a 'cancer' in the Middle East
Iran's parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani referred to Israel as a "cancer" in the region on Friday and accused it and the United States of trying to "sterilize" the Arab Spring revolutions. “Even after the revolutions that happened in the region, the US and Israel tried to divert and devastate some of the revolutions so that Israel can benefit,”...Press TV news quoted Larijani as saying...   

Khamenei: US has 'controlling, meddlesome' attitude toward Iran
Iran's Supreme Leader said on Saturday the United States would overthrow the Iranian government if it could, adding Washington had a "controlling and meddlesome" attitude towards the Islamic Republic, Iranian media reported. ..."American officials publicly say they do not seek regime change in Iran. That's a lie. They wouldn't hesitate a moment if they could do it," he was quoted as saying...

Turkey: F-16 fighter scrambled after suspected hijack
Turkey scrambled an F-16 fighter jet on Friday to escort a commercial flight after a passenger allegedly made a bomb threat, demanding to go to the Winter Olympic games in Sochi. Footage from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen airport showed the Pegasus airlines plane after safely landing from the Ukrainian city of Kharkov. 
 
Number of children dying in Afghan violence increases, as Taliban bombs hit civilians
The number of children killed and wounded in Afghanistan's war jumped by 34 percent last year as the Taliban stepped up attacks across the country and continued to lay thousands of roadside bombs, the United Nations said Saturday.

American Kenneth Bae, who is being held in North Korea, has been moved from a hospital to a labor camp, the State Department said on Friday.
