Turkey purges 13,000 police officers over failed coup
Turkey has suspended almost 13,000 police officers for their alleged links with the US-based Muslim cleric, Fethullah Gulen. The latest wave adds to the 100,000 or so civil servants dismissed or suspended since July's failed coup. Mr Gulen denies the government's accusation that he or his supporters orchestrated the coup.  
US and the Philippines begin war games
The Philippines and US have begun their annual joint military exercises, which the Philippine president has said will be the last while he is in office. President Rodrigo Duterte made the comment last week, although later his defence secretary said there was no official order yet to that effect. The Philippines, once a colony of the US, has a longstanding defence relationship with Washington.

A senior leader of the Muslim Brotherhood organisation has been killed by Egyptian Interior Ministry forces, the ministry says. In a statement, it said Mohamed Kamal died in a gun battle along with another member of the group on Monday. The ministry said Mr Kamal was in charge of the group's armed wing, although the Brotherhood maintains it is a exclusively peaceful organisation.
