6 dead, dozens injured in powerful earthquake in southern Philippines
A 6.7-magnitude earthquake killed at least six people and injured more than 120 in the southern Philippines late Friday, officials said. The powerful quake hit roughly 14 kilometers northwest of Surigao City, at about 10:03 p.m. (9:03 a.m. ET), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. At least 30 aftershocks have rattled the surrounding areas in the hours following the quake, the Institute measured.

Minor Earthquake Hits Taiwan, Injuring 4
A minor earthquake hit the southern part of Taiwan early Saturday, injuring four people, authorities said. The National Fire Agency reported four cases of residents being hurt by falling items. Authorities said the magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck near the coast of Tainan city at around 1:12 a.m.

US blocks appointment of Palestinian to UN envoy, cites bias
The United States blocked on Friday to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ choice of former Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad as the body’s new representative to Libya. “The United States was disappointed to see a letter indicating the intention to appoint the former Palestinian Authority Prime Minister to lead the UN Mission in Libya,” Haley said in her statement.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iran President Hassan Rouhani “better be careful” after Rouhani was quoted as saying that anyone who speaks to Iranians with threats would regret it. Trump was asked in a brief appearance in the press cabin aboard Air Force One about Rouhani’s reported remarks to a rally in Tehran to celebrate the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

New Zealand whales: Hundreds more stranded
The mass stranding of whales on a remote beach in New Zealand has taken a turn for the worse as 240 more arrived. Earlier on Saturday, volunteers had refloated some 100 of the more than 400 pilot whales which beached on Thursday. But a human chain, with volunteers wading neck-deep into the water, failed to prevent a fresh pod making landfall.

US President Donald Trump has told an Israeli paper that settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank is not “good for peace” with the Palestinians. In an interview with Israel Hayom, Mr Trump said a peace deal was possible but urged Israel to “act reasonably”. Israel has advanced plans for 6,000 new settler homes since the inauguration last month of Mr Trump, whom it sees as more sympathetic than his predecessor.

President Donald Trump and his advisors are devising a plan which would feature Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt more directly involved in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, according to a report by the “New York Times” Thursday. According to the report, Trump sees that Netanyahu is also trying to strengthen ties with moderate Muslim countries as part of the fight against Iran, and as such, President Trump believes Saudi Arabia and Egypt can be of assistance.

Hundreds of immigrants arrested in ‘routine’ U.S. enforcement surge
U.S. federal immigration agents arrested hundreds of undocumented immigrants in at least four states this week in what officials on Friday called routine enforcement actions…The enforcement actions took place in Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and surrounding areas, said David Marin, director of enforcement and removal for the Los Angeles field office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Only five of 161 people arrested in Southern California would not have been enforcement priorities under the Obama administration, he said.

The Federal Reserve Board’s top bank regulator said on Friday he would resign, giving a boost to President Donald Trump’s plans to ease reforms put in place after the 2007-09 financial crisis. Daniel Tarullo, a strong regulator who was dovish on monetary policy in his seven years on the board, said in his resignation letter to Trump he would leave the U.S. central bank on or around April 5.

China expels 32 South Korea missionaries amid missile defense tension
China has expelled 32 South Korean Christian missionaries, a Korean government official said on Saturday, amid diplomatic tension between the two countries over the planned deployment of a U.S. missile defense system in the South. The 32 were based in China’s northeastern Yanji region near the border with North Korea, many of whom had worked there more than a decade, South Korean media have reported.

Iran allowing Syria-bound Russian planes to use airspace-report
Iran has again allowed Russian planes to use its airspace during recent operations in Syria, a senior Iranian security official was quoted as saying on Saturday. In August, Russian aircraft for the first time used an Iranian air base to conduct strikes in Syria. The Russian military said its fighters had completed their tasks, but left open the possibility of using the Hamadan base again if circumstances warranted.
